The direct answer

Must a Hindu cremation take place before sunset?

Many Hindu families prefer to perform cremation while there is daylight. It is a customary and religious preference in several traditions, but no single sunset deadline governs every Hindu community or crematorium in India.

The Garuda Purana contains a passage concerning movement of the deceased at night. The Rig Veda contains funeral hymns invoking Agni. Neither of these passages establishes a modern rule that all cremations must finish by 5 PM. Municipal or trust-managed crematoria set their own operating arrangements, and some accept cremations at night.

What the scriptures actually say

The Vedas and the Garuda Purana are different kinds of Hindu texts. Their funeral passages should not be combined into one supposed rule about a modern crematorium's closing time.

01 · Vedic text

Rig Veda 10.16

The funeral hymn addresses Agni, the fire, and speaks of the deceased's journey to the ancestors (pitrs). It describes the religious meaning of the cremation fire, but the hymn does not prescribe a 5 PM finishing time or a single nationwide rule about sunset.

Agni, funeral rites and the journey to the ancestors.

Text identification: Rig Veda, Mandala 10, Sukta 16. It is misleading to attribute a modern municipal booking window to this hymn.

02 · Puranic text

Garuda Purana · Preta Khanda

One English rendering of Preta Khanda, Chapter 35, verses grouped as 41–43, expresses concern about taking the deceased out at night and leaving the body unattended. It is part of a broader discussion of care of the deceased and funeral practice.

A traditional caution about night-time movement, not a 5 PM clock rule.

Wording and verse numbering vary by edition. The night-time reading is not identical in every available edition or translation.

Understanding the distinction

A Purana is not a Veda

The Garuda Purana belongs to Puranic literature and includes teaching about death, funeral rites and the afterlife. The Rig Veda is an older Vedic collection containing hymns, including funeral hymns. Hindu Antyeshti practice is also shaped by later ritual manuals, regional customs and family traditions.

A family's priest may prefer that the funeral begin before sunset, or that certain acts be completed in daylight. That guidance should be understood as the practice of the relevant tradition, rather than proof that every Hindu cremation after dark is forbidden.

Important difference“Before sunset” may refer to starting the procession, performing the main rites or lighting the pyre. It does not always mean that the entire cremation must finish before daylight ends. Ask the priest which stage the family's custom concerns.
Why daylight is preferred

The religious custom and its practical meaning

Daylight provides a familiar setting for the funeral procession, offerings and participation of relatives. A preference for daylight does not make a necessary delay a failure of the last rites.

☀️

Day and ritual sequence

Families following a daytime custom may plan the procession and cremation while there is natural light. The details differ between regions and communities.

🙏

Family participation

Viewing, prayers, circumambulation, the initiation of cremation and the role of the chief mourner take time. Some rites occur at home, others at the ground.

🕯️

Prompt but orderly rites

Many families prefer cremation without an avoidable delay, while still following medical, legal and preservation requirements.

Time-of-death scenarios

Select a situation

🌅 ☀️ 🌙
6:30 AMAn illustration of time of day, not a sunset calculation

Morning: confirm the process before booking

A daytime slot may be possible, but only after the death is appropriately certified, the body is released and a facility confirms a slot.

  • Contact the relevant doctor or hospital.
  • Check documents and the correct cremation method.
  • Confirm the available slot and reporting time.

A sudden or suspected unnatural death requires the applicable medical and police process. A customary preference for finishing rituals before dusk never overrides lawful release or an investigation.

If death occurs after sunset

What to do when cremation cannot take place immediately

Where a family follows a daylight tradition or the chosen crematorium has closed, the immediate priority is medical confirmation and the authorised handling of the deceased. The next cremation can be arranged at a time the family and facility can accommodate.

01

Confirm the death

Contact the treating doctor, hospital or emergency authority as appropriate. Do not assume a sudden or unexplained death is a routine natural death.

02

Complete release formalities

Collect the relevant medical certificate and hospital release papers. Follow police and postmortem procedures where the case requires them.

03

Arrange preservation

For an overnight wait, ask a qualified provider about mortuary refrigeration or appropriate freezer arrangements. Conditions depend on the circumstances.

04

Confirm the next cremation

Check the selected ground's admission time, method, booking acknowledgement, priest arrangements and the rites permitted at the site.

When the family prefers daylight

An overnight delay may be necessary

Medical or police release, transport distance, preservation, equipment availability and the family's custom may make next-morning cremation appropriate. Ask the priest which prayers or preparations may be completed before the cremation and which should wait.

Do not transport the deceased to a facility solely on the assumption that a 24×7 helpline means 24×7 cremation admission.

Medical and legal arrangements

What paperwork is needed before cremation?

The medical cause-of-death certificate and the registered death certificate are different documents. The papers required before release or cremation depend on where and how the death occurred.

SituationUsually relevant first stepsWhat must be confirmed
Death in a hospitalHospital documentation, appropriate medical cause-of-death certification (Form 4 where applicable) and release procedures.Authorised release and the selected crematorium's required documents.
Expected natural death at homeMedical confirmation; Form 4A where an eligible treating practitioner can issue it under the applicable rules.Any further verification required locally; do not attempt self-certification.
Sudden, unexplained or suspected unnatural deathPolice and medico-legal steps, postmortem documentation and authorisation where required. The handling authority's instructions before transporting or cremating.
Death registrationCivil registration with the appropriate registrar, separate from medical certification.Whether the facility needs a death intimation or other record at cremation time; do not assume the final registered certificate is always available first.
📄

Form 4 / Form 4A

The medical certificate of cause of death is used for the prescribed medical-certification process. The relevant form depends on whether death occurred in a medical institution or elsewhere.

🪪

Death registration

The registrar's death certificate is the civil record issued through registration. It should not be confused with hospital release or the medical cause-of-death certificate.

A final cremation time depends on when the body is lawfully released and the ground admits it. This remains true even at a ghat described as operating around the clock.

Four common questions

What people often hear—and what it means

01

“The Vedas say cremation must finish by 5 PM.”

Not supported by the cited texts. Rig Veda 10.16 is a funeral hymn. The Garuda Purana is Puranic literature and contains a night-time caution in one English rendering. Neither provides a modern 5 PM municipal cutoff.

02

“Every crematorium closes at sunset.”

Incorrect. Bengaluru's cited electric booking portal states 8 AM–5 PM, while official services in Patna and Varanasi describe 24-hour operation. Facility-specific confirmation is necessary.

03

“A 24-hour cremation ground guarantees an immediate pyre.”

Not necessarily. Admission, available pyres or furnaces, documents and ritual arrangements may still affect when cremation can start.

04

“A delay until morning makes the rites invalid.”

Too absolute. Families may face necessary delays because of certification, preservation, travel or investigation. The family priest can guide any customary adaptations.

Frequently asked questions

Cremation before and after sunset in India

Answers depend on the difference between Hindu custom, an individual crematorium's working hours and lawful release of the deceased.

Does the Garuda Purana prohibit every cremation after sunset?

A passage in one translation of its Preta Khanda discusses concern about moving the deceased at night. It does not establish a universal 5 PM deadline. Editions and translations vary, and the family's tradition determines how the passage is understood in practice.

What does the Rig Veda say about cremation at night?

Rig Veda 10.16 invokes Agni during funeral rites and speaks of the deceased's journey to the ancestors. It does not prescribe a modern crematorium closing time. A later religious custom should not automatically be labelled a verse from the Rig Veda.

Is cremation after sunset illegal in India?

No uniform nationwide sunset ban is established by the municipal records considered here. A particular crematorium may restrict its operating hours or admission. The relevant local rule, booking process and lawful release requirements still apply.

Are crematoriums in India open 24 hours?

Some are. The Bihar government's Patna crematorium portal publishes 24×7 working hours, and the Kashi city portal describes around-the-clock cremation at Manikarnika Ghat. Bengaluru's cited electric-crematorium booking portal, by contrast, states 8 AM–5 PM. Confirm the specific site before travelling.

If someone dies after sunset, can cremation happen the next morning?

Yes, next-morning arrangements are common where the family prefers daylight, the facility has closed, or documents cannot be completed immediately. Ensure appropriate medical confirmation, authorised release and preservation as necessary.

Does “before sunset” mean the pyre must be fully burnt by sunset?

Not necessarily. Some customs concern when the main rites or cremation are begun rather than when the fire has completely finished. Ask the family's priest for the interpretation followed in that tradition.

Can prayers be performed at home after dark?

Many families may continue prayers, readings and preparations according to their tradition while awaiting cremation. Whether particular rites should be conducted or postponed is a religious question for the family's priest, subject also to medical and legal instructions.

Are electric and wood cremation hours always the same?

No. Enclosed electric or gas furnaces may operate on fixed appointment slots, whereas a wood platform can have a different reporting and use arrangement. Even within one crematorium, the times for each method can differ.

Is a government death certificate required before cremation?

The registered death certificate and medical cause-of-death certificate are distinct. Crematoriums may require relevant medical, release or police papers at the time of cremation. Confirm the chosen facility's documentation requirements instead of assuming the final civil death certificate must already be issued.
